Dr Susanne Sorensen, head of research at the Alzheimer's Society, advised individuals, including those who may wear alert bracelets, to exercise and keep active as it is important in preventing vascular dementia and Alzheimer's Disease.
Her comments follows a study by the Boston University School of Medicine, which found a link between high levels of abdominal fat in middle age and an increased probability of having such illnesses.
Dr Sorensen also recommended that, in addition to being more active, a greater number of people should look at getting a varied 'Mediterranean type' diet, which reduces the risk of dementia, although she warned that is no guarantee.
According to 2005 report by the World Health Organisation, approximately 4.6 million people are diagnosed as having some form of dementia, which afflicts cognitive functions and can lead to a decline in short and long-tern memory.
