New autism strategy 'will raise awareness' of medical jewellery wearers

Autism is sometimes described as a 'hidden disability', one expert has claimed.

Amanda Batten, head of external affairs at the National Autistic Society, explained that there is a lack of awareness and understanding about the condition.

As a result, she has welcomed the introduction of a new strategy from the Department of Health that will help adult sufferers who wear medical jewellery to live more independently.

Ms Batten said that focusing on training to improve the public's 'awareness and understanding of autism is a really important first step in terms of helping people to work with people on the autism spectrum and help support them'.

She added that her organisation will be working with local authorities to try and implement the new strategy successfully.

The plans were unveiled by care services minister Phil Hope recently, who noted that only 15 per cent of autism sufferers are in paid employment, while 49 per cent live at home with their parents.ADNFCR-2908-ID-19651345-ADNFCR
