Rhubarb 'can help fight cancer'

Cancer sufferers are used to undergoing gruelling treatments, such as chemo and radiotherapy, as well as wearing a medical alert bracelet in case they need emergency care.

But scientists in the UK have determined that the humble rhubarb could also be an effective weapon in the fight against this dreadful disease.

Rhubarb has been known to have a number of medicinal properties for years.

But researchers at Sheffield Hallam University have found that baked rhubarb is a very good source of polyphenols, which can help kill or inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

Dr Nikki Jordan-Mahy, one of the scientists involved with the study, said the findings could potentially lead to the development of new treatments.

'It's very important to discover novel, less toxic treatments, which can overcome resistance,' she commented.

Dr Jordan-Mahy said resistance is a common problem, adding that current treatments are not effective in all cancers.

According to official figures, about 126,000 people die from cancer in Britain every year.
