Mothers may need diabetic bracelets after pregnancy

Women who put on lots of weight in the early period of their pregnancy could be more likely to develop diabetes.

Research published in Obstetrics and Gynecology said the risk is significantly higher if a female puts on more weight than is recommended during the first three months.

The findings from the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research suggest that many mothers could need to wear a diabetic bracelet after the birth of their child.

Lead author Monique Hedderson has therefore urged healthcare providers to make sure their patients know about how much weight they should be putting on during this period.

'Our research shows that weight gain in early pregnancy is a modifiable risk factor for gestational diabetes,' she commented.

Diabetes is a very common condition in the UK, which official figures say affects about 2.3 million people.

However, the NHS believes that about 500,000 more Britons are unaware that they are diabetic.
