Lower intelligence linked with greater heart disease risk

Patients could be more likely to need treatment from a heart specialist if they have lower IQs, new research suggests.

According to a study published in the European Journal of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation, IQ is almost as closely related with heart disease as smoking.

This puts it ahead of obesity and high blood pressure as factors behind the condition.

Dr David Batty, one of the researchers behind the study, commented: 'From a public health perspective, there is the possibility that IQ can be increased, with some mixed results from trials of early learning and school readiness programme.'

He also suggested that health promotion campaigns be planned with individual cognition levels in mind, in order to reduce instances of heart disease among those with lower IQs.

Coronary heart disease kills about one in four men and one in six women in the UK, so taking steps to manage the condition is essential.

One good idea is wearing a medical alert bracelet, as these can ensure doctors are aware of your illness if you ever need emergency treatment.
